Solo/Ensemble-Ordering Pieces:
A reminder that students are to be held responsible for ordering their own solo and ensemble music this year and that as we are hosting this event this year...that each of our students will be involved in at least one event. Again, any/all music ordered/purchased can be donated then to the program for volunteer/service hours and each piece should average $5-$15.

An email previously went out with suggested Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Solo titles for Grade III, IV, and V literature. All literature selected must be from the approved FBA list which can be found at www.flmusiced.org/fba Once there...click on top menu link for music lists and then Solo/Ensemble and then your respective grouping (Brass, etc....). Pieces are listed in instrument score order and solos are listed from Grade I to Grade VII. All high school students must perform a Grade III or higher and any/all students wishing to play at State Assessment, must play a Grade V or higher. Any/all literature that is considered significant or standard literature/repertoire, will have an "S" between the Grade of the piece and the Event Number/Code.

I would recommend ordering all music from www.floridamusicservice. com and then having all music shipped directly to your homes. As it is now December 8th, music ordered this week should ship and be received before the Winter Break Holiday is over. (You can also order from www.jwpepper.com)

Solo and Ensemble is February 19th and 20th!!!! Make sure to give yourself enough time to practice your piece!

I must have all selected titles submitted to me on Friday, December 18th for entry into our online FBA registration program!

A Letter from the Director

Dear Students and Parents,

It is my distinct pleasure to welcome all students and parents to our Pembroke Pines Charter High School Music Family.  It is my goal to make the experience you and your child share in the Pembroke Pines Charter High School  Programs exciting, challenging and rewarding.  I will be here to serve the needs of your family in every way possible.

Believing that....

"High expectations foster higher outcomes"

The Pembroke Pines Charter High School Band Program exists to provide students a comprehensive, balanced education in instrumental music.  Through the study of music, students develop intellectually, physically, emotionally, and socially.  Intellectual growth is enhanced through the student's ever-increasing knowledge of musical concepts, its unique notation system, terminology, styles, historical era, and historical figures.  Physically, students must adapt to the many challenges of learning an instrument and transforming symbols into sound.  Students also develop a sense of leadership through learning to work side-by-side with others in a group setting.  Perhaps the most unique and essential element making music education so special, however, is that it provides students the opportunity to develop aesthetically.  Aesthetic education helps a student develop his/her own natural responsiveness to the power of music.  Through studying, creating and experiencing quality music, the student becomes more attudned to his/her individual expressiveness.  Simiply put, music educates the whole child-mind, body and heart.

I will ask your child to reach to discover his or her highest potential in a disciplined and structured manner both individually and as a group.  I am confident that through this type process, we can all experience the thrill of musical performances and the satisfaction of  having done our very best.

I believe that every student, regardless of ability or age, can grow musically.  My pupose is to enrich and challenge students by helping them discover the special meaning that exists only in creating, re-creating, and experiencing music.  I encourage students to be involved in the program as their time and interests allow.  In this way, I hope to inspire and tmotivate your child to achive their fullest potential in music!

 Mrs. Jessica Rivero

Upcoming Jazz Auditions

Auditions for Jazz I and Jazz, Too will be slated in September, 2009 after All-State Auditions!

Photo Gallery Info

As you may or may not know, we are gathering photos (and videos, if you have them) to be included in our end of the year band video to commemorate what is proving to be a really great year!

To facilitate this, I have created a web gallery where you can upload your photos and even download those you would like to keep. You add photos by simply clicking on the upload button and following the prompts. You can also upload video clips right into the gallery. We are not just looking for spectacular, pro quality photos for this project (as Mr. Schrager has been so kind to give us), we also want your candids, cellphone pix, quick snapshots, whatever. We want this to be a look back on the whole band experience, not just games and performances, but any time members of the band are working together, hanging out, whatever. Even photos during class would be great (assuming your band directors give you the OK).

the gallery is at:

ID is: band
Password is: photos

You can also add photos from by email or through your mobile phone by sending them to this address:  glmac-f395@post.me.com

I will be checking periodically to gather the new photos that have gone up and try to keep the gallery at a manageable size, so don't panic if something you uploaded isn't there after a couple of weeks.

Thank you in advance for helping out and adding to this effort. With lots of people donating their photos, we should have every band member included and make this a really great remembrance of the year.

Check it out, there are lots of photos there already, but we need lots more to make this successful. Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Band Honors V

If your student is enrolled in Band Honors V as a junior or senior, it is necessary that they do the following prior to the end of this quarter:

They must submit to me in a written proposal what their intended study/subject area is.  What musical element are they choosing to study?  (i.e.. music history, theory/composition, cultural aspect of music....etc....)

Furthermore, I need for them to begin to have a broad enough understanding of their subject that they can submit to me next week as well, an outline of what they intend to study over the course of the 2nd-4th quarters.

Finally, I need for them to submit in writing what their intended final project will be.  In what form is their presentation?  (Is a power point, paper, oral presentation to the class, composition, etc...)

An example of what I need would be as follows:

Student Name:  Jessica Rivero
Band Honors V Written Proposal

Area of Study:  History of Jazz Music

Outline:

1.  First years of Jazz-New Orleans
2.  20s-Chicago, New York (Boogie Woogie)
3. Swing
4.  Be-Bob/Blues (Progressive Big Bands)
5.  Dixieland Revival
6.  West Coast Jazz
7.  East Coast Hard Bop
8.  Free Jazz/Latin Tinge
9.  Early 60's Jazz Boom
10.  Blues/Caribbean Cool
11.  Jazz-Rock Fusion
12.  Funk/Acid Jazz

I will be studying the time period as well as composers and performers of the time, listening and analyzing recordings.

Final Presentation-I will be submitting a video presentation of the History of Jazz utilizing music of the time and photograph stills with a voice over.

I need all proposals for the 2009-2010 school year by September 1, 2009. Any topic of interest is acceptable.  I have students who are studying composition/theory, others who are doing a broad scope of music history; others studying the musical genre, or the history of Rock and Roll.  I have students who are studying a specific culture of music (Mid Eastern or Latin, etc...)
