Students' Responsiblity for Balance, Blend and Intonation
The student's silent questioning sequence is as follows:
"If you hear yourself..., one of three things is happing..."
1. To determine balance, the silent question is: If you hear yourself above all others in your section or band, you are overpowering or overblowing. Make an adjustment to volume by playing softer; lose your identity by making your tone become a part of the section and/or ensemble.
2. To determine blend, the silent question is: If you still hear yourself and you made the volume adjustment in #1, you are playing with poor tone quality. Adjust embouchure, breath support, or posture. Poor tone quality will not blend with your section or band; lose your identity by making your tone become a part of the section and/or ensemble!
3. To determine intonation, the silent question is: If you still hear yourself and you made the adjustments to balance and blend, you are playing out of tune. Adjust the length of your instrument.
Balance (volume) and Blend (tone) precede intonation (playing in tune with yourself and others)!!!!!

3. Work out a reward system with your parents-extra incentive!.
4. When you practice use these steps:
Play through the whole piece/exercise first to determine what needs work.
Isolate/work on the problem areas-only about 1 to 3 measures at a time.
Play this game as you work.
Begin at a slow tempo. When you play it 5 times correctly, play the game again slightly faster
If you make a mistake or hesitate, you must begin counting over
When you can play it 5 times correctly at the appr. tempo, without hesitation, go to the next
Don't spend more than 5 min. on one problem area-try again tomorrow!
(This works for scales too-don't keep practicing the whole scale if you only have problems in one part!)

1. Notes-include Key Signatures and Accidentals
2. Rhythm-include appropriate Tempos; keep a steady Pulse
